In Hurworth School Art department we are very proud of the fantastic artwork that our students produce. Our end of Year GCSE Art exhibition is testament to this and showcases some of our wonderfully talented students. Art and design is a valued subject and student’s artwork is displayed everywhere throughout the school as a reminder of students past and present that have contributed to our embracement of arts, culture and diversity.

Art and design is a popular subject, with many pupils accessing the Art room on a lunchtime. A variety of exciting activities take place on a daily basis and we pride ourselves on nurturing the vibrant, caring and artistic haven we have created.

We believe that art and design should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, providing them with the ability to invent and create their own individual pieces of art. Students will explore many different artists, cultures, materials and techniques, building their confidence and refining their skills in order to produce artwork that they are proud of.

Why do we study Art and Design?

The creative industry is large and varied. This industry currently provides 2.8 million jobs in the UK. By providing Art and Design as a separate subject at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, we can teach pupils some of the essential creative skills needed in order to pursue their hopes and ambitions further. These jobs range from artists and designers, through to advertising, marketing and computer science.

Alongside this, Art and design also teaches students some of the most important lessons in life – creativity, perseverance, patience, and the meaning of individual expression! Art and design at Hurworth School contributes to the development of the whole person. We provide opportunities for pupils to define themselves in relation to others, their friends and the culture in which they are part of.

Year 7

Learning Outcomes

In Year 7 students will explore the building blocks of art and design. They will initially develop their drawing and shading skills, then begin to discover different materials and techniques, such as collage, photography, paint and ceramics. They will look at contextual sources to develop their designs and ideas and will experience both 2D and 3D materials.

Year 8

Learning Outcomes

In Year 8 students will explore new materials and techniques and revisit and refine some of their existing skills. They will continue to improve their drawing and shading skills through the topic of portraiture, alongside this learning the importance and application of proportion. They will explore historical, contemporary artists, and wider world traditions and cultures through the Indian Art project and produce final outcomes using paper mache and wood.

Year 9

Learning Outcomes

In Year 9 students will explore in more depth drawing, painting, collage and 3D artwork. In this year students are encouraged to produce sketch books that are much more personalised. This helps to prepare them for GCSE Art, should they decide to choose it as an option. Students will explore ICT and larger scale pieces of artwork that will challenge and provide them with the opportunity to really express themselves.

Learning Outcomes

In Year 10 students produce two projects. Within these projects students focus on their recording and observing skills with emphasis on high quality drawing skills and photography. Students will explore manipulating images using editing software and will explore drawing with a variety of materials. Students will begin to create a portfolio of work which will demonstrate their ability to meet the assessment objectives.

Learning Outcomes

In their final year, art and design students will build an externally assessed portfolio of work meeting the assessment objectives. Refining and modifying their work will be paramount and they will need to be able to analytically reflect on the work they have done previously.
This will lead to a 10-hour external exam, where students will culminate their ideas.
