Personal, Social Health and Citizenship Education
Why do we study Personal, Social Health and Citizenship Education?
Our PSHCE curriculum aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking whilst giving students opportunities to develop their understanding of democracy and justice, rights and responsibilities plus identities and diversity.
To embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, students need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Students can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. PSHCE can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.
The PSHCE department’s aims are therefore to create:
• Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
• Confident and autonomous individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
• Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society
How do we study it?
In Key Stage 3, pupils study PSHE, RSHE and Citizenship as one subject (PSHCE).
In Key Stage 4, pupils study PSHE, RSHE, Citizenship and RS as one subject (SMSC).
Both subjects follow the same curriculum overview (below) in a spiral programme so that students are introduced to topics, knowledge and skills in an age and stage appropriate way. Students are assessed at the end of each module to check the growth in knowledge and also the development of skills and attitudes.
