How is the character of Banquo presented in Macbeth?

Banquo is shown as a brave and trustworthy soldier. Like Macbeth, he fights for King Duncan, but unlike Macbeth he stays loyal and refuses to be corrupted by ambition. Shakespeare uses Banquo to highlight Macbeth’s growing moral weakness.

Business 1

Name the different types of business ownership and give one benefit and one drawback of each.

Sole trader A business owned by one person. Benefit: The owner keeps all the profit. Drawback: The owner has unlimited liability, so they could lose personal possessions if the business gets into debt.

Partnership A business owned by two or more people. Benefit: More ideas and shared responsibility between partners. Drawback: Profits have to be shared, and disagreements can happen.

Private limited company (Ltd) A business owned by shareholders, but shares are sold privately. Benefit: Owners have limited liability. Drawback: Shares cannot be sold to the general public, so raising finance can be harder.

Public limited company (plc) A business owned by shareholders, with shares sold on the stock exchange. Benefit: Can raise large amounts of finance by selling shares to the public. Drawback: Anyone can buy shares, so there is a risk of losing control.

Franchise A business that has bought the right to use another business’s brand and business model. Benefit: Lower risk because the brand is already established. Drawback: Franchisees have to pay fees and follow strict rules.

Logic Error: A logic error occurs when the program runs without crashing, but produces incorrect output because the algorithm or reasoning is wrong. Example: using the wrong operator in a calculation.

Name the main methods businesses use to raise finance (think about the advantages and disadvantages of each).

Answer: Family and friends Money borrowed from or given by relatives or friends. Retained profit Profit kept back in the business instead of being taken by the owners. New share issue A company sells more shares to raise money. Loan or mortgage Money borrowed from a bank or lender, usually repaid over time with interest. Advantage: Businesses can raise a large sum of money. Disadvantage: Interest must be paid, making it more expensive.

Selling unwanted assets The business sells things it no longer needs, such as old equipment or vehicles. Advantage: Raises money without borrowing. Disadvantage: Only works if the business
has assets to sell.

Overdraft The bank allows the business to spend more money than is in its account, up to an agreed limit. Trade credit A business buys goods or materials now and pays the supplier later. Hire purchase A business pays for an asset in instalments over time. Government grants Money given by the government to support a business, often for a specific purpose.

Agility The ability to change direction quickly and under control. Balance The ability to keep the body stable while stationary or moving. Coordination The ability to use two or more body parts together smoothly and efficiently. Power The ability to apply strength quickly; a combination of strength and speed. Reaction time The time taken to respond to a stimulus. Speed The maximum rate at which a person can move all or part of their body. Cardiovascular endurance (stamina) The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles over a long period of time. Flexibility The range of movement possible at a joint. Muscular endurance The ability of a muscle or muscle group to contract repeatedly without tiring. Strength The maximum force that a muscle or muscle group can apply against a resistance.

Anabolic steroids These are used to increase muscle mass and strength and to help an athlete train harder. Effect: Bigger muscles, greater power, faster recovery from intense training. Beta blockers These are used to slow heart rate and reduce anxiety or shakiness. Effect: Helps performers stay calm and steady, especially in sports requiring accuracy. Diuretics These are used to make the body lose water quickly through urine. Effect: Rapid weight loss, often to make a weight category. They can also dilute urine and try to hide other drugs. Narcotic analgesics These are strong painkillers. Effect: Reduce pain, allowing performers to continue training or competing despite injury. Peptide hormones These are drugs such as EPO that affect the body’s natural processes. Effect: Can
increase red blood cell production, improving oxygen transport and endurance. Stimulants These are used to increase alertness, energy and aggression. Effect: Faster reactions, more focus, less tiredness.
