Numeracy

Numeracy is a whole-school responsibility. We aim to develop students who are confident and capable in using mathematics in their learning and in a range of real life contexts. Across the school curriculum, students are given opportunities to develop and apply the skills and knowledge they need to understand and interpret numerical information, including calculation, estimation, measurement, ratio, proportion, data handling and problem-solving.

We want our students to be mathematically curious and to discover that the subject goes far beyond the content of their Maths lessons. Our IGNITE programme provides opportunities for students to explore fascinating areas of mathematics which are not usually covered in the traditional curriculum, including binary and number bases, networks and cryptography. Students are taught to be financially literate and sessions are delivered on budgeting, exchange rates and the use of credit cards.

Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and approach problems in different ways, helping to promote engagement with mathematics and develop a curiosity about where maths may lead, both in school and beyond.
